I honestly wouldn't have known about 東旺飯店 if my dad didn't bring my sisters and me here. Sometimes, dads just know the hidden gems (or they just have a sixth sense for good food). We opted for their dishes on rice for a quick meal before heading home. I got their Fried Fish with Dried Bean Curd (豆腐斑腩煲) - my go-to dish. It always brings back memories of the food at Tasty House 18, where I also had an undying love for this dish. It kind of grew on me. The 豆腐斑腩煲 was pretty tasty - exactly how it should be. The fish was perfectly fried, the bean curd was delightful, and the sauce was just right (not too salty, not too bland). It was a comforting dish. The prices are so affordable, you might think you've stumbled into a time warp (back to when a dollar could actually buy you something). Each dish on rice came out less than $10. Definitely recommend this spot for a quick bite or takeout. During our visit, the restaurant was tranquil, with few customers around. The serene ambiance provided a welcome respite from the usual hustle and bustle, making the dining experience all the more pleasant. So, if you're in the mood for some solid Chinese food that won't break the bank, give 東旺飯店 a try.

Cantonese cuisine might be making a resurgence in other parts of NYC, but I feel it's fallen out of favor in Flushing. Despite having been around for the better part of a decade, MJ USA is still among the least well known Canto spots in the neighborhood. Ultimately, they have done a good job with the service, food, and prices. Their Chinese name 東旺 (dong wang) is far more prominent than the English acronym would suggest. It's sort of akin to flourishing east, something that would point to a highly successful, eastern type establishment. I almost think they'd be better as "Dong Wong" (#1) or the Mandarin equivalent, "Dong Wang." For awhile there, MJ loved to fancy itself as a destination for karaoke, sports bars, and Cantonese food. I've never done either of the former, but I can say that the food served at MJ's is good overall and I've always felt the dishes were tasty. The braised fish fillet, scrambled egg with shrimp, crispy fried chicken, along with the freshwater seafood and Cantonese BBQ selection. The latter included roast pork belly, char siu bbq pork, and roast duck, all of which I would have given a thumbs up on presentation and overall taste. It's not terribly large, but solid for NY standards. There are tables for large groups and private area designations. The service is decent and the value for the family style dishes is still quite high. I wouldn't call MJ a destination per se, but they are among the more slept-on places in the borough.

Solid neighborhood joint to get roast meats and various Cantonese dishes. Their stuff is generally good and service is quick. I often get the char siu and roast duck from here.
